Serving 58,000 inhabitants on the Romsdal Peninsula

RIR IKS is responsible for the collection, transportation, and handling of household waste from approximately 58,000 residents across multiple municipalities in Romsdal. The company also manages waste from commercial entities.

– Our landfill is an essential part of our operations, but it generates significant amounts of leachate water that must be treated to prevent environmental pollution, says Vidar Kleppe, Project Manager at RIR IKS, adding:

– Our new agreement with Mivanor will allow us to discharge treated leachate water and reduce our environmental footprint.

Must comply with strict regulations for landfill discharges

The new contract entails that Mivanor will provide MivaMag™, which will remove heavy metals, organic compounds, and nutrients from the water. This ensures that RIR can meet strict requirements set by national environmental authorities.

– We have been exploring solutions for a long time to secure a high purification rate for the leachate water from RIR's landfill, says Robert Tarasz, CEO of Mivanor.

He adds:

– Now we have found a solution that ensures RIR IKS operates within current regulations.

Long process with small-scale tests has yielded results

For several years, we have worked together to find an optimal solution for treating the leachate water from the landfill in Årødalen. Small-scale tests have been conducted, and the results show that our technology achieves a purification rate in accordance with the regulations from the County Governor of Møre and Romsdal.

– Mivanor's purification technology provides both a high cleaning effect and solid waste materials that we can manage locally at our own facility, Vidar says, following up with:

–This is crucial to ensuring a comprehensive and sustainable treatment of the leachate water.

Will be able to treat 100% of the leachate water

The RIR IKS landfill was completed in the mid-1980s and currently has the capacity to treat around half of the water volume.

However, as a result of this new agreement, 100 percent of the leachate water will be treated.

– We are in the process of closing parts of the landfill, and this process will lead to its expansion. In this context, it is important that the leachate water is treated in the best possible way.

– We believe Mivanor can contribute to this, Vidar concludes.
