Last fall, Sandnesposten reported on the collaboration between Nordic Bulk and Mivanor.

At the time, Nordic Bulk’s project manager, Steen Sanddahl, stated that innovation towards future solutions in aggregates and gravel—amid increasing sustainability demands—has been a critical component of Nordic Bulk's growth.

Technology Plays a Key Role

At the facility of Massebalanse AS, a recycling plant for excavated masses located in Disenå, Sør-Odal, Mivanor's water treatment technology has been crucial to the functionality of the entire system.

By treating the process water used to wash soil, we ensure the water can be reused repeatedly, enabling both water recycling and continuous operation.

– It’s a critical detail in a large system, and these choices allow us to enhance sustainability in our deliveries, explains Sanddahl.

He elaborates on how projects like these are carefully designed not only to save money for the customer through efficiency and reuse but also to benefit the environment and promote better stewardship of natural resources.

– This applies from the reuse of process water to the end delivery, which is the reuse of soil after washing.

Norway Among the "Worst in Europe"

According to the Norwegian Geotechnical Institute, reusing surplus masses and waste from the construction and civil engineering sectors is crucial to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, protecting the environment, and simultaneously generating investments and jobs. They call it a "huge business opportunity."

Similarly, SINTEF reports that Norway is "among the worst in Europe" for material reuse, with the Netherlands leading. Only Cyprus and Slovakia recycle less than Norway.

A Significant Project for Mivanor, Too

Mivanor’s Managing Director and Technical Manager, Robert Tarasz, emphasizes that this project is also important for Mivanor. He praises Nordic Bulk’s project management and Massebalanse AS’s sustainability focus at the Disenå facility.

– It’s exciting that our technology can play such a significant role in a large-scale project like this. By treating water, it can be reused repeatedly, which is not only good stewardship of a natural resource but also improves the customer’s bottom line.

– We see that one of Nordic Bulk’s main focuses is that what benefits the climate and environment also benefits the wallet, says Tarasz.

MivaMag™ technology ensures that the treated water enters a circular value chain, where it can be reused repeatedly after the soil has been cleaned.
